Anything but Boring: Celebrating Eight Years of Partnership with Mawer, our #RECONNECT2023 Lead Partner

Many of you will be familiar with Mawer Investment Management (Mawer), the Canadian investment firm out of Calgary that has been the lead partner for the CFC conference since 2015.  However, you may be less familiar with the journey Mawer and CFC have embarked on together over the last six years. How did the partnership start? What have we done together? And why is Mawer so committed to strengthening communities?

Back in 2014, Mawer was invited to attend and present at CFC’s Peer Gathering for EDs/CEOs, a moment where medium and large-sized foundation leaders gather to network and learn. Mawer’s motto to “Be Boring. Make Money™” resonated with the audience of over 20 community foundations, whose important work depends upon wise investment decisions and balanced asset stewardship.

Since then, Mawer has worked alongside CFC to support community foundation learning as a partner of the Learning Institute and our Lead Conference Partner.

  • In 2015, over 600 participants gathered in Mawer’s office in Calgary to explore “The Wild, Wild Why”, a reference to the renowned Calgary Stampede happening at the same time as well as a commitment to explore the key issues that impact our communities. Mawer opened the event and led a session on investment trends and future impact.

  • In 2017, over 750 participants explored Belonging in Ottawa. Mawer hosted a VIP Reception, provided opening remarks, and held a session on leadership. The team also joined the Connected by Canoe project where 70 participants paddled from Dow Lake to the Canadian Museum of History!

  • In 2019, Mawer joined us again as the Lead Partner in Victoria. Alongside opening and closing remarks, a session on investing, a clear highlight was Mawer delivering a chat about investments on a beer bike pedaling around the city!

  • In 2021, Mawer joined us for CFC’s first ever virtual summit with over 600 attendees!

Alongside these annual conferences, Mawer has been there for community foundations at various Peer Gatherings and Rookie Retreats, and virtually in webinars. In the early days of COVID-19, Andrew Johnson, an institutional portfolio manager from Mawer, delivered a steadying talk on Managing Investments in Volatile Markets, providing calm advice in an uncertain moment.

This year, we're proud to welcome back Mawer as our Lead Partner for RECONNECT 2023, the upcoming community foundations conference in Toronto! They'll be hosting a Welcome Reception on June 1st and leading an informed session around investing amidst economic turbulence. They will also have a dedicated meeting space where you can 1:1 conversations with any Mawer staff.

"We're excited for what the CFC has planned for Reconnect 2023. The chance to gather again, grow and renew our connections, to rethink and reimagine what's possible for our communities, is truly uplifting—and reenergizing."

Craig Senyk, CFA, Chair, Mawer Investment Management

“We have loved working alongside Mawer for many years now, and we are excited to have them return as our Lead Partner at the 2023 RECONNECT Community Foundations Conference. Our shared values and commitment to community make this a very meaningful relationship.”
